Chapter Ten

Tim took Chelsea to his brother Pete at a ranch in Montana. Tim was pissed with her about her baby. Thankfully, Glen stood up to Tim about Debbie, or we might have been purged because monogamy is not condoned in the collective.

Raking her hair back from her face, Laurie loaded the industrial size washing machine with sheets. This was her third load. Beside the washer, the dryer whirled, making a grating sound.

She had her story. The names Chelsea, Tim, Darby, Pete, and their relationship to Ghost Mountain Ranch were now perfectly clear. With some research into this group called The People, she could put everything together, write the story, and get out of this place.

But she didn’t want to.

For one thing, her best source for information remained Pete. He could tell her what the group did before he left it. What was its attraction to young people of the day? And why did they use bombs to prove their point? That crazy idea got her grandfather killed.

Was this why Sarah committed suicide? Guilt? A sane person would have remorse for causing the death of a policeman and setting bombs that could harm others.

Then there was Slade.

She pulled in a deep breath, then slowly released it. What about Slade? She’d been prepared to dislike him—the son of a wealthy family—while she had nothing. Just a name. And a dream of someday writing an article or a novel, something that people would read. Something that made a difference.

But they had more in common than hippy grandmothers who were sixties radicals. They had the same yearning, the desire to find themselves. To be true to themselves. If she left now, she’d never get to know him.

A spasm of despair twisted through her heart. For the first time in her life, she found a man desirable—physically and emotionally—and she didn’t know what to do with that feeling.

She worked silently the rest of the day, doing the job Darby had told her to do before Ellie intervened.

Hours later, when the dinner bell clanged on the dining hall porch, she was more than ready to fold the last sheet, stretch the ache in her lower back, and join the crew for dinner.
